The Similan Islands
Nestled in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Phang Nga province, the Similan Islands are a designated marine national park and consistently ranked among the world’s top dive destinations. These two pinnacles, meaning Red Rock and Purple Rock respectively, are legendary.
Hin Daeng is famous for its steep wall, adorned with soft red corals that give the site its name, and its strong currents which attract large pelagic species. Divers frequently encounter reef sharks, enormous schools of barracuda, dogtooth tuna, and, crucially, it’s one of Thailand‘s most reliable spots for spotting manta rays and whale sharks, particularly from February to April.
Adjacent to Hin Daeng lies Hin Muang, Thailand‘s deepest drop-off, a breathtaking purple-hued soft coral wonderland. The site is a macro photographer’s dream, bursting with nudibranchs, crabs, and shrimp, while also playing host to larger visitors like grey reef sharks and whale sharks. The overall diving experience from Koh Lanta is typically more relaxed than the liveaboard intensity of the Similans, making it perfect for those who prefer day trips and evenings ashore. The healthy hard and soft coral reefs around Koh Lanta also provide excellent opportunities for beginners and those looking for more gentle dives, revealing macro life, turtles, and occasional reef sharks.
