There’s something utterly captivating about a weekend escape, especially when it transports you to a place steeped in history and brimming with charm. For our latest jaunt, we set our sights on the magnificent city of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage site nestled in the picturesque county of Somerset, England.

Our journey began on a crisp Saturday morning, arriving at Bath Spa station, just a stone’s throw from the city centre. First stop, naturally, was the awe-inspiring Roman Baths. Walking through the ancient complex, you can almost hear the echoes of Roman footsteps. The Great Bath, with its steaming waters, is a truly splendid sight. Afterwards, a quick stroll led us to the majestic Bath Abbey, its intricate fan vaulting a testament to incredible craftsmanship. We spent the afternoon leisurely exploring the quaint independent shops around Milsom Street and enjoying a proper afternoon tea at a delightful little café near Pulteney Bridge, savouring clotted cream and jam with our scones.

Sunday dawned with promises of further exploration. We began with a gentle uphill walk to the iconic Royal Crescent and The Circus, marvelling at the Georgian architecture that defines Bath. The sweeping lawns of Royal Victoria Park offered panoramic views back towards the city. A visit to the Jane Austen Centre was a must for any literary enthusiast, offering a charming insight into the author’s time in Bath. For lunch, we sought out a traditional pub, enjoying a hearty Sunday roast with all the trimmings. The afternoon was spent meandering along the serene River Avon, crossing Pulteney Bridge once more, and simply soaking in the ambience of this elegant city. Before heading back to London, we picked up some locally made fudge from a sweet shop near Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House, a perfect souvenir of our delightful escape.

Bath is more than just a city; it’s an experience. Its Georgian splendour, ancient history, and vibrant contemporary culture weave together to create a truly unforgettable weekend getaway. If you’re seeking a destination that offers both relaxation and a rich tapestry of sights, put Bath at the top of your list. It’s simply marvellous.
